Study Finds Skipping Breakfast Isn’t Healthy (or Cool)

Seriously.

When did you become so busy that you didn’t have time for a quick breakfast to fuel the start of your day?

Was it after work started routinely scheduling “morning check-in meetings” at 8:00 am?

Was it after you bravely decided to sign up for 18 credits this semester while also agreeing to be captain of the Astrology Club and Debate Team?

Was it after you had a baby and now 30 minutes with no crying and screaming feels as peaceful as a 12-day stay in the Amalfi Coast?

Hey, we all have our reasons.

What you’re missing when you skip breakfast

A new study published in Proceedings of the Nutrition Society and detailed in Food Navigator USA finds that those who skip breakfast are more likely to have nutritional gaps in their diet.

The study analyzed the data of over 30,000 US adults who participated in a survey between 2005 and 2016.

One prominent trend that emerged is that when people miss out on certain nutrients at breakfast, they often fail to get those nutrients at all throughout the rest of the day.

The most common missing dietary components were calcium, potassium, fiber, and Vitamin D. Shortages in these nutrients are often associated with chronic health issues.

For the average adult, the daily intake goal for each of these nutrients is:

  • Calcium: 1,000mg/per day
  • Vitamin D: 600mg/per day
  • Potassium: 2,600-3,400mg/per day
  • Fiber: 22-31mg/per day

Even worse, the people who skipped breakfast were more likely to scarf down excess added sugar, carbs, and fat because they ended up snacking more frequently than the folks who didn’t skip breakfast.

“Snacking is basically contributing a meal’s worth of calorie intakes for people who skipped breakfast,” says Christopher Taylor, professor of medical dietetics in the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University and the senior author of the study.

Get your nutrients first, then get going

The solution? Simply set your alarm for 4:45 am every day and meticulously prepare a whole quiche, eggs benedict, pancakes from scratch, and fresh-squeezed orange juice using only Brazilian oranges from your local farmer’s market.

Okay, please don’t do that every day.

Soylent Cafe Mocha

In the mornings, when minutes move like seconds and you’re in a madhouse dash to get to where you’re going, try a bottle of Soylent on the run.

You can sip this in traffic, on the bus, on the Subway, or at your desk while you fire up your computer.

We intentionally made Soylent with 28 vitamins and minerals, 20 grams of plant-based protein, potassium, and magnesium for the chaos of weekday mornings.

Even better, Soylent is made with slow-burning carbs that will keep you full and nourished and not reaching for a bag of oily chips at 11:00 am. We’ve got 8 creamy flavors, so take your pick from Banana, Vanilla, Mint Chocolate, Original, Creamy Chocolate, Cafe Mocha, Cafe Chai, and Strawberry.

Don’t skip breakfast when you can sip breakfast.
