What Is Allulose?

Where Does Allulose Come From?

Unlike most other sweeteners, allulose is a real sugar. Allulose is a monosaccharide, or simple sugar, that is found in tiny quantities in foods you find in nature like wheat, figs, and raisins. 

Because allulose is found in nature in very small amounts, it’s been granted entry to an elusive group of sugars called “rare sugars.” Allulose’s rarity is defined by its slight differences in chemical composition compared to other sugars.

Allulose is recognized as safe to consume, and beyond being safe, it’s known as beneficial. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has raised no objections to four separate Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) notifications filed for allulose.

Because allulose is made from natural fruits, its benefits don’t only out perform artificial sweeteners but also sucrose.

  • Allulose is a lower calorie option: There are approximately 0.4 calories per gram of allulose, compared with four calories per gram of sucrose.
  • Allulose does not increase blood glucose: Allulose’s chemical composition prevents it from being metabolized. People with diabetes can benefit from allulose’s properties because it doesn’t increase blood sugar or insulin levels.
  • Allulose cooks like sugar: Many find incorporating sweeteners like stevia and Splenda into their diets difficult. When cooked, artificial sweeteners produce a stickiness or chemical taste that doesn’t hit the sweet spot. Allulose can be cooked and used just like regular sugar and gains credit for tasting like it’s supposed to.

Allulose’s benefits far outweigh its reported side effects. This rare sugar is indeed new to the game and still being studied, so there is more for all of us to learn.
